Soft Power – Musical – Ahmanson Theatre Watched the musical “Soft Power.” Hillary Clinton had a love affair with a Chinese communist. Slow Act 1 but interesting experimentation with unconventional theater elements and radical (but relevant to our Trump-era) Chinese/communist ideas.
The Marvelous Wonderettes – Musical – Glendale Centre Theatre Watched The Marvelous Wonderettes, a jukebox musical featuring retro tight harmony girl group songs. With such incredible voices, it’s a shame they used prerecorded accompaniment. Kinda wish there was a plot too.
ZM – Musical – Village Theatre Watched “ZM” – an overly-cheesy developing musical about a zombie apocalypse caused by a new fast food burger. Unless there’s a weird cult following or a massive script overhaul, I don’t anticipate this going to the mainstage next year.
Guys and Dolls – Musical – Blanchet Bishop Performing Arts Opening night to Guys And Dolls Musical. Light and cute old timey show. Good production budget. Unconvincing portrayal of mobster-like gamblers.
Hairspray – Musical – Village Theatre Best Hairspray version I’ve seen so far (out of 5). Will probably see again. It was interesting to hear Tracy with a more full-bodied (no pun intended) non-squeaky voice. Wish they could add the movie’s songs “Lady’s Choice” and “New Girl in Town.”
