You Can’t Take It With You – Play – Sound Theatre Company

The Stranger tricked me into watching You Can't Take It With You on Broadway thinking it was a musical. Ended up being a 3-act (yikes!) play. Sooooo Seattle what with its colorblind and "gender-blind" casting. Great set but not-so-great sound effects. Good actors. Just not a fan of long plays with few scene changes.

The Gin Game – Play – Village Theatre

Watched The Gin Game at Village Theatre. Grandma and grandpa playing gin rummy and complaining about nursing home life. Was like watching paint dry. ?
Watched The Gin Game at Village Theatre. Grandma and grandpa playing gin rummy and complaining about nursing home life. Was like watching paint dry. ?

Type: Play

Recommendation: Don’t see it unless you like to watch people talking with no action. So boring!

Rating (Out of 5 Stars): 3 stars

Negatives: There was no plot/action. It was like watching paint dry. This was the first Village Theatre production where I actually left at intermission. I guess there’s a first for everything… :-/

Story, Script, and Lyrics: Gramps and granny play gin rummy and talk out life … mostly complaining about their nursing home. You may actually like this play if you liked The Humans (which was also “meh” in my book).

Cast and Theater Company: Small two-person cast, which didn’t do this boring play any favors. The actors were good but the play was just bad. I’m surprised  Village Theatre  took on such a bad piece to perform since their productions are usually pretty satisfying.

Venue and Set: Interesting detailed set. It’s a shame they never had any scene changes.

Music and Audio: Okay. Nothing particularly good or bad to say.

Price: $$ (Mid-priced at $58-72)

Dates:

  • Issaquah: January 18 – February 25, 2018
  • Everett: March 2-25, 2018

Ibsen in Chicago – Play – Seattle Repertory Theatre

Watched the play-in-a-play "Ibsen in Chicago." European working class immigrants with secrets try to make it in America and put on the play "Ghosts." Prima Donna character was pretty funny.

Type: Musical

Recommendation: Worth seeing!

Rating (Out of 5 Stars): 4 stars

Negatives: Not many setting changes. Everything occured in a fictional theatre hall.

Story, Script, and Lyrics:  Play-in-a-play where European working-class immigrants with secrets try to make it in America and put on the play Ghosts.

Cast and Theater Company: Typical Seattle Repertory Theatre production. Loved the prima donna character Helga (played by Kirsten Potter).

Venue and Set: Single setting in a run down fictional theatre hall.

Music and Audio: True to Seattle Repertory Theatre, no microphones were used but the performers projected well.

Price: $$ (Medium-priced at $54-$71)

Peerless – Play – ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery

Watched the play "Peerless" which was basically Heathers and Macbeth with ambitious Asian twins. Dialogue was a little difficult to follow but the play was good.
Watched the play “Peerless” which was basically Heathers and Macbeth with ambitious Asian twins. Dialogue was a little difficult to follow but the play was good.

Type: Play

Recommendation: See it!

Rating (Out of 5 Stars): 4 Stars

Negatives: The dialogue was annoyingly vague. Very “millennial-speak.”

Story, Script, and Lyrics: Ambitious Asian twins will do anything to get into the college of their choice. Based on MacBeth with a little Heather’s mixed in.

Cast and Theater Company:  Typical high quality ArtsWest production and cast.

Venue and Set: Simple, yet effective.

Music and Audio: No microphones but the space is small enough and the performers project loud enough that you’re able to hear okay.

Price: $ (Low-priced at $17-38)

Dates: January 18, 2018 – February 11, 2018

Seating: Make sure you sit in the middle. The left and right arena seats suck.

Wit – Play – SecondStory Repertory

Opening night to the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "WIT." It took great skill to effectively intersect cancer with annoying English lit academia. Surpised how much I enjoyed it. Maybe I'm biased cause I work in oncology. Ending needed a little more maturation.

Type: Play

Recommendation: See it!

Rating (Out of 5 Stars): 4 Stars

Negatives: The ending was a little choppy and awkward. Needs more maturation.

Story, Script, and Lyrics: An English literature professor gets cancer. True to the play’s name, it is a very “witty” script. I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats. Surprisingly, my I hate for English literature (there were a billion references) didn’t get in the way of enjoying the play.

Cast and Theater Company:  Superb acting especially by the main character (played by Eleanor Moseley).

Venue and Set: Simple, yet effective. Most of the scenes take place in a hospital.

Music and Audio: No microphones but the space is small enough that you’re able to hear okay.

Price: $ (Low-priced at $30)

Dates: January 19, 2018 – February 3, 2018

Seating: General admission. Come early!
